Get to know EAU24’s educational and tactile activities
At the centre of every EAU annual congress is the aspiration to fulfil the clinical practice needs of urologists such as yourself. These congresses have been all-in events, and the 39th Annual EAU Congress (EAU24) this spring will also guarantee an immersive experience for you.
You will be pleased to know that educational and practical activities will remain an integral part of the EAU24 scientific programme because as Greek philosopher and polymath, Aristotle, once said, “The only way to learn is to do.”
This article features a new course, four redesigned courses, and hands-on training (HOT) courses organised by the European School of Urology (ESU) and EAU sections. Read on to know more.
Finding the right words
Unsure about how to present your data and write your scientific articles well? Do you sometimes ask yourself, “Am I using the right words and format that best represent my research?”. What better guide to have than the seasoned professionals from the highly-reputable European Urology (EU) journal and the ESU? The EU journal’s own editor-in-chief, Prof. Alberto Briganti (IT), will spearhead the course.
Transform your writing to great scientific writing with the help of the new ESU Course 20: Medical writing for urologists: An interactive workshop on how to write, publish and promote the “perfect” manuscript. Learn how to capture a journal editor’s attention with your scientific article; perform and report crucial statistics; and maximise the use of social media to disseminate your work.
You will also be in close-knit group sessions that will focus on the best practices in methodological approach, and strategies on how to captivate readers and craft impactful conclusions.

Revamped courses
To parallel the ever-changing landscape of urology, the courses at the annual EAU congresses are regularly updated. The following notable courses are upgraded:
ESU Course 08 Surgical complications during laparoscopic/robotic urological procedures: Prevention, diagnosis, management, complications
Maximise safety when you perform urological procedures. Since the risk of complications is a major issue for laparoscopic and robotic surgeons, this course will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the topic, summarising how to prevent, recognise, grade, and fix surgical issues.
This course, which will be led by Prof. Bernardo Rocco (IT), will also include an interactive video session that will merge various experiences to approach minor, major, and harmful drawbacks of common urological interventions.
ESU Course 19 Complications in endourology: Causes, management and prevention
Examine complications in endourological procedures in detail. This course will cover a spectrum of topics, which will include the complications following extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), transurethral resection of the bladder (TURB), transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), anatomical endoscopic enucleation of the prostate (AEEP), cystolithotripsy, and urethrotomy. Gain valuable insights into the prevention of complications as this course will focus on early identification and effective management.
Spearheaded by Course Chair Dr. Vincent De Coninck (BE), this course is interactive and case-based which will promise a didactic experience enriched with video illustrations.
Expand your knowledge and refine your skills to navigate the challenges of endourology confidently. Join this course now.
ESU Course 29 Tips and tricks in cystectomy
Discover diverse approaches of radical cystectomy (e.g., open, laparoscopic, and robotic) and their main differences during this course. Get tips and tricks with the most important steps of each approach, as well as when executing a nerve-sparing and/or organ-sparing procedure. To help you prevent complications and improve their management, you will also analyse and be familiarised with the most common complications. Learn how to choose which specific urinary diversions for which purpose.
Receive vital information on various approaches and treatment anatomy related to nerve sparing, organ sparing, intracorporeal diversion. Course Chair Prof. Joan Palou (ES) and fellow experts will provide you with tips and tricks on how to improve efficacy and bolster results.
ESU Course 31 Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) in urological surgery
Get a detailed overview of the current standard ERAS protocols and pathways, as well as practical tips on how to get started with an ERAS programme at your centre.ERAS has become a mainstay in modern surgical management. Its aim is to optimise and standardise perioperative management to reduce the risk of complications, promote faster recovery and shorter hospital stays.Course Chair Dr. Jochen Walz (FR) and his fellow experts will provide you with ERAS’s key elements, which will include the increased use of minimally-invasive surgical approaches and standardised clinical pathways before surgery and continuing through recovery; and a proactive approach to strengthen patient mobilisation and return to oral nutrition.

Get them while they’re HOT
You are also encouraged to join the popular Hands-on Training (HOT) courses which will take place throughout EAU24.
The HOT course “Endoscopic stone treatment – Step 1” is specifically tailored for urologists who want to gain primary endoscopy knowledge. This course is the first step in the Endoscopic Stone Treatment (EST) curriculum and includes four key exercises: flexible cystoscopy, rigid cystoscopy, semi-rigid ureteroscopy, and flexible ureteroscopy.
Interested in a comprehensive training on laparoscopy fundamentals and improving your key laparoscopic techniques? The HOT course “Laparoscopic urological skills – Step 1” comprises four essential exercises aimed at honing your skills related to depth perception and bimanual dexterity: peg transfer, circle cut, needle guidance, and knot tying.
Enrich your radiology know-how during the HOT course “Prostate MRI reading for urologists” and get the essentials on MRI sequences, scoring systems, Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS), use of Medical Image Merge (MIM) software for MRI interpretation, and MRI diagnosis.
If you would like to know more about the latest MRI-ultrasound technical approaches currently available and how to perform a transperineal biopsy, the HOT course “MRI Fusion Biopsy” is a must-join for you.
As you know, urodynamics (UDS) are a set of tests that measure lower urinary tract function. Participate in the HOT course “Urodynamics” for an in-depth take on the topic. The course will include activities Rotation, Setting Up, Running a test, Troubleshooting, and Interpretation.
Strengthen your skills and know-how in innovative ultrasound and standard ultrasound procedures of the urinary tract, kidney, bladder, prostate, and the testis with the HOT course “Urologic ultrasound”.
Want to improve your fundamental proficiency in transurethral treatment? Enhance your depth perception, hand-eye coordination, control, handling, and overall technique during the HOT course “Transurethral treatment – Step 1”. This course will focus on:
- Crucial basic skills: Adeptly navigate the lower urinary tract
- Rigid cystoscopy: Emphasise accurate anatomical identification and bladder neck visualization
- Bladder biopsy: Practice precise specimen collection and minimise complications resection loop handling for safe and effective tumour resection
- Direct vision internal urethrotomy skills: Address urethral strictures with precision
Interested in practicing the different Sacral Neuromodulation (SNM) steps, and/or perform primary percutaneous nerve evaluation, tined lead and battery implantation, programming, and troubleshooting? Leading experts in the field will be your tutors during the HOT course “Sacral Neuromodulation”.
