EAU18 – Prostate, bladder cancer topics to dominate poster sessions in Copenhagen
A total of 1,338 abstracts were accepted for the poster sessions in the 33rd Annual EAU Congress (EAU18) to be held in Copenhagen from 16 to 20 March 2018. Prostate, bladder and renal cancers were among the most investigated topics accounting for nearly half of the total accepted abstracts.
This year a total of 4,381 abstracts were submitted compared to 4,684 submissions recorded for the congress in London. Last year around 1,170 were accepted for actual presentations. A total of 87 video abstracts were accepted this year, a number similar to last year’s congress.
The submissions came from 78 countries around the world including accepted abstracts from previously under-represented countries such as Afghanistan, Zambia and Armenia, among others.
Reflecting trends in previous years, around 65% of the submitted abstracts came from first authors based in Europe, while 22% came from Asia and 7.1% originated from North America.
The abstract submissions were listed under 27 topics that cover the full range of urological conditions, management, therapies, research and technological developments.
Prostate cancer, one of the most examined topics, has 12 sub-topics, compared to seven sub-topics in urothelial tumours and five in kidney cancers.
Other prominent topics were functional urology (LUTS), infectious diseases, paediatric urology, and new experimental technologies and techniques. In prostate cancer, the most popular topics were surgical treatment, biopsies and imaging, and systemic treatments. On the other hand, basic research in urothelial tumours topped the list of sub-topics in bladder cancer with 50 accepted abstracts.
Six awards in two categories (Oncology and Non-Oncology) will be awarded to the most innovative and insightful research findings. The Best Abstract Video submission will also be recognised with a cash prize.
Expert-Guided Poster Tour
In Copenhagen, a new feature on abstract viewing will be introduced with the “Expert-Guided Poster Tour,” where one of the members of Scientific Congress Office will act as a dedicated moderator who will lead and inform groups on highlighted abstracts. Abstracts of particular interest in terms of new insights, best practices and prospective clinical role will be presented by the authors and commented on by the moderators to participants in the poster tour.
The idea is similar to a guided museum tour but with participants also expected to be pro-active by way of questions and commentary. The following poster tours are scheduled with each tour taking approximately an hour:
- Urology by exploring: New experimental technologies and techniques in benign urogenital reconstruction
Saturday, 17 March 2018, 16:00-17:00
- Following the path to optimized stone treatment
Sunday, 18 March 2018, 12:15-13:15
- Prostate cancer: (Salvage) surgery and outcome
Sunday, 18 March 2018, 15:45-16:45
- Prostate cancer: Diagnostics and active surveillance
Monday, 19 March 2018, 12:15-13:15
