EAU25 Awards Ceremony: Shining a spotlight on urological achievements
At the 40th EAU Congress in Madrid, Spain, the Opening Ceremony began with a vibrant Flamenco performance that blended tradition with innovation. Spanish dancers performed alongside an immersive display of 3D projections and a rich fusion of modern and classical music, creating a captivating experience for attendees.
To begin the prestigious awards ceremony, EAU Secretary General Prof. Arnulf Stenzl (DE) welcomed three new honorary members to the EAU: Prof. Truls-Erik Bjerklund Johansen (NO), Prof. Ivan Minčík (SK), and Dr. David Winkle (AU).
The EAU Willy Gregoir Medal was presented to Prof. Francesco Montorsi (IT) for his significant contribution to the development of urological specialty in Europe. The EAU Frans Debruyne Life Time Achievement Award was awarded to Prof. Anders Bjartell (SE) for his longstanding and important contributions to the activities and development of the EAU.
Other notable awardees included young European urological academic Prof. Isabel Heidegger (AT), who was presented the EAU Crystal Matula Award, and Dr. Ricardo Mastroianni (IT) received the EAU Hans Marberger Award for best European paper published on minimally invasive surgery in urology.
Prof. Alex. Mottrie (BE) received the EAU Innovators in Urology Award, and Prof. Peter Rathert (DE) was awarded the EAU Ernst Desnos Award for his contributions to the history of urology.
The EAU Prostate Cancer Research Award was awarded to Prof. Jonas Hugosson (SE), and the EAU Patient Advocacy Medal of Excellence was received by Mrs. Mary Lynne van Poelgeest (NL)
This year also marked the 50th anniversary of European Urology, the official flagship journal of the EAU. Prof. Stenzl presented editorial leadership awards to past Editor-in-Chief’s including Prof. Claude Schulman (BE) (Editor-in-Chief from 1975 – 2005), Prof. Francesco Montorsi (IT) (Editor-in-Chief from 2006 – 2013) and Prof. James Catto (GB) (Editor-in-chief from 2014 – 2023). In celebration of the 50th anniversary, current Editor-in-Chief Prof. Alberto Brigati (IT) received a commemorative plaque, highlighting the journal’s legacy in advancing research and innovation in urology over the past five decades. Cathy Pierce received an award for 20 years of service with European Urology.
The awards ceremony was followed by the EAU Networking Reception, where attendees had the opportunity to connect with their peers.
