EAU17 Abstract Submissions Surpass Previous Congresses

A record-breaking number of abstracts for poster and video presentations were submitted for the upcoming 32nd Annual EAU Congress (EAU17) in London. There were approximately 5,000 abstracts for EAU17 which surpassed the number of submissions of two previous congresses. The Munich congress in 2016 obtained a total of 4,414 abstracts and the Madrid congress in 2015 received 3,975 abstracts.

Submissions for EAU17 came from 81 countries across the globe, majority of which were from Europe and Asia. Abstracts for the Munich congress originated from 77 countries, and 71 countries were recorded for Madrid.

Poster sessions
The Scientific Programme of EAU17 is comprised of poster sessions spread out in four congress days, from 24 to 27 March 2017. Out of the 4,625 abstracts submitted for these poster sessions, 1,171 are selected. This represents 25.3% of the submitted poster abstracts.

Ranked according to popularity, the top five topics for poster submissions were prostate cancer screening/diagnosis, biopsies and imaging; prostate cancer treatment and surgery; nephron-sparing approaches for renal tumours; functional LUTS (lower urinary tract symptoms) in terms of incontinence, neuro-urology and treatment; and BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) diagnosis and treatment.

Video sessions
The highly-anticipated London Congress has 11 video sessions. From the 342 abstracts submitted for these sessions, 89 are accepted which is 26% of the total. These selected video abstracts constitute of 61 submissions from Europe, 20 from Asia, and 8 from the Americas. More than 250 reviewers are tasked to examine around 53 topics covering the whole range of urology.

In terms of topic coverage, majority of the video submissions focused on nephron-sparing approaches for renal tumours; urothelial tumours (management of infiltrative/advanced tumours and surgical management); prostate cancer treatment and surgery; and BPH diagnosis and treatment.

Overall, the acceptance rate of the submitted abstracts for both poster and video sessions is 25.37%. As of 19 December 2016, all submitters can check the status of their submitted abstract(s) online.

Awards
All accepted abstracts are eligible for prizes of the best abstracts in various categories such as oncology, non-oncology, abstracts (by residents) and for the three best video abstracts.
